Leaving AmbatovyNarrow moat

Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — moat facet

Sumitomo finally sold its Madagascar nickel stake, and the tax effect nearly cancelled the loss.

On 1 May 2026 Sumitomo signed an agreement to divest its stake in the Ambatovy nickel business1. It held 54.17%2, and the equity loss from the Madagascan nickel business was ¥18.9 billion in the year to March 20253. Operations had been suspended in February 2026 ahead of a cyclone4.

A large loss, almost entirely offset by tax.

The sale loss was about ¥73 billion, offset by about ¥72 billion of tax effects, leaving an impact of about minus ¥3 billion after advisers' fees5. In the first quarter, the tax effect turned the company's income tax line into a benefit of ¥45.0 billion6. Sumitomo retains certain nickel offtake rights7.

The exit ends a twenty-year project that produced repeated charges8910. It also removes the single largest drag on the Mineral Resources segment.

The company began participating in the project in 200511. In the year to March 2026 it also recorded a loss of about ¥19 billion on a shareholder loan to the project, with a tax effect of about ¥13 billion12. The total cost of Ambatovy over two decades is the sum of charges spread across many annual reports.

The measure is the Mineral Resources segment's profit without Ambatovy. It earned ¥25.4 billion in the first quarter against ¥10.6 billion13; a full year near the ¥95.0 billion forecast14 would show the segment better off without it.
