Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — threat to the moat
Some of what Sumitomo sells, it sells at a loss.
Not every exit is a gain. In the latest year the company recorded a loss of about ¥5 billion on divesting its melon business and an impairment of about ¥9 billion on its North American mushroom business1. Together they turned the Lifestyle segment's profit negative2.
Selling a business that does not earn its cost of capital often means selling it for less than its book value. The company's willingness to take those losses is part of the discipline.
It also means that the asset-sale programme can produce losses as well as cash.
The mushroom business, Highline, lost ¥9.4 billion in the latest year and is forecast to lose ¥1.2 billion in the current one3. The impairment reduced the book value; the business is still running.
The measure is the net gain from asset replacement. The company recorded ¥72.0 billion of asset-replacement and extraordinary profit in the latest year4; a negative figure would show the easy sales done.
