Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — threat to the moat
Sumitomo's electricity retail margin depends on the weather and the wholesale market.
An electricity retailer buys power at wholesale prices and sells it at retail tariffs. Its margin depends on the gap between the two.
Sumitomo attributes its latest-year result to normal demand under average weather1, which means an unusual winter or summer could move it in either direction.
The company's gas and power trading business, which contributed ¥28.0 billion2, helps manage that exposure.
The retail forecast for the current year, ¥20.1 billion3, is slightly lower than the ¥22.0 billion of each of the last two years. A retailer that owns generation and trades gas and power can hedge part of its supply cost, and Sumitomo does both through the same segment4.
The measure is the retail contribution in a year of extreme weather. Holding near ¥20 billion would show the supply hedging working.
