Power and Energy TransformationNarrow moat
Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — moat facet
Sumitomo's power business is its largest earner, and part of its profit comes from selling plants it built.
Sumitomo's largest segment by profit in the latest year was Energy Transformation Business, which earned ¥84.3 billion in the year to March 2024, ¥96.4 billion in 2025 and ¥102.4 billion in 202612. It has a forecast of ¥115.0 billion for the current year3. Its return on invested capital was 10% in the latest year and is forecast at 12%4.
The core is overseas power. Sumitomo's overseas IPP and IWPP businesses, which generate power and in some cases desalinate water under long-term contracts, contributed ¥82.5 billion in the year to March 2025 and ¥73.0 billion in 2026, with ¥85.2 billion forecast5. Asia provides most of it: ¥66.1 billion and ¥60.3 billion6.
The rest is closer to home and to markets. Its domestic electricity retail business contributed ¥22.0 billion in each of the last two years7, its global natural gas and power trading business ¥24.3 billion and ¥28.0 billion8, and LNG Japan, a 50% venture, a smaller amount9.
The segment earns steadily because most of its power is sold on contract. It is also where Sumitomo recycles capital: the company promotes asset turnover in the overseas power business, selling stakes in operating plants10, and from the current year counts those gains as underlying profit11. Management aims to keep the segment's earnings at around ¥100 billion including such gains12.
The regional mix of overseas power is shifting. Europe and the Americas contributed ¥7.8 billion in the year to March 2025 and ¥1.9 billion in 2026, and are forecast at ¥23.2 billion, while other areas earned ¥8.6 billion and ¥10.7 billion13. The forecast increase in Europe and the Americas includes gains on sales and contract renewals in the United States14.
The moat is narrow: long-term contracts and project-development skill, in a business that sells its best assets to fund new ones. The measure is the segment's profit without sale gains; the ¥115.0 billion forecast includes them.
Profit has risen for two years and the forecast is higher again.
The largest segment; the forecast includes gains from selling power assets.
