⚠ The Trillion Yen That Earns ¥3 BillionModerate threat
Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — threat to the moat
A tenth of Sumitomo's capital earns about 0.3%, by its own count.
Sumitomo's own classification puts about ¥1 trillion of invested capital in businesses with low growth and low returns, which earned about ¥3.0 billion of underlying profit in the latest year1. Total invested capital was about ¥9,440 billion2, so about a tenth of the company's capital is earning close to nothing3.
Some of those businesses can be sold; some can be repaired; some have no buyer. The company has raised its asset-sale target4, and the Ambatovy sale5 removes one of the largest.
Every yen left in them lowers the company's total return, which has been 8% for three years6.
The company separates another category: about ¥0.7 trillion of capital in businesses it runs on an asset-turnover basis, such as real estate and power generation assets7, which are meant to be built and sold. Together with the low-return category, that is nearly a fifth of invested capital that is either for sale or needs repair8.
The measure is the size of the low-return category. Its next disclosure below ¥1 trillion would show the sales reaching the right businesses.
