⚠ Twenty-Five Billion Dollars Committed Before a Single ViewerModerate threat

Netflix (NFLX) — threat to the moat

Netflix commits billions to content years before anyone watches it, which lifts margins in growth and squeezes them in a slowdown.

Netflix's costs are committed years ahead of the viewers who pay for them. Content obligations reached $25.1 billion at 30 June 20261, up from $21,713 million at the end of 20232. At the end of 2025, $11,528 million was due within twelve months3.

Half a year of revenue already promised.

That is the other face of the scale model. Fixed costs spread over a growing audience produce rising margins, as they have: 18% in 2022 to 29.5% in 202545. The same fixed costs spread over a stalling audience produce falling margins, because the commitments do not shrink when growth does.

The next twelve months' obligations alone equal about a quarter of 2025 revenue6. Cash content spending is guided to about 1.1 times amortization in 20267, a little above 2025.

Netflix can carry this. Free cash flow was $9,461 million in 20258 and net debt only $5,244 million in June 20269.

The commitments are growing faster than the balance sheet shows. Of the $24,039 million owed at the end of 2025, $18.4 billion was not on the balance sheet10, against $17.0 billion a year earlier11 and $14.6 billion at the end of 202312. On top of that, Netflix expects between about $1 billion and $4 billion of payments over three years for titles not yet known13. The debt figure most investors look at, $14.3 billion in June 202614, is the smaller of the company's two large fixed claims.

Netflix's own description of its assets explains why the commitments recur. On average, "over 90% of a licensed or produced content asset is expected to be amortized within four years"15. A library that wears out that fast must be replaced continuously, so the obligations are not a one-time build but a standing cost of staying in business.

Put obligations beside revenue growth. If obligations keep rising about 5% a year while revenue growth falls toward single digits, the operating leverage that built the margin will start to run the other way.

The fixed cost already committed; rising while revenue growth slows would reverse the operating leverage.
