⚠ Nine Tenths Written Off in Four YearsModerate threat
Netflix (NFLX) — threat to the moat
Netflix writes off more than 90% of a show within four years, so its moat is the annual budget rather than the library.
Owning content is less permanent than owning a film vault used to be. Netflix says that on average "over 90% of a licensed or produced content asset is expected to be amortized within four years"1. The accounting reflects how viewing works: most hours are watched soon after release.
That means the library must be rebuilt continuously. Content assets of $32,778 million are only about two years of amortization at the 2025 rate23. A rival that stopped spending would have little left within a few years; so would Netflix.
The advantage therefore lies in the budget, not the archive. It depends on Netflix continuing to spend around $17.7 billion a year in cash on content4.
Netflix's accounting is conservative in this respect. Writing off most of a show within four years means the balance sheet understates the value of any title that keeps drawing viewers, such as KPop Demon Hunters, the first title to spend more than 52 consecutive weeks in the Global Top 105.
The warning sign would be a year in which content assets fall. They rose to $33,837.6 million at 30 June 20266; a decline would mean Netflix is spending less than it writes off.
