Netflix (NFLX) — threat to the moat

Netflix is replacing 4.375% debt with 5.25% debt, a small cost that would matter only after a large borrowed acquisition.

Netflix's interest cost is creeping up. In July 2026 it issued $1 billion of 5.250% notes due 2036 to repay 4.375% notes due 20261. Interest expense was $777 million in 2025, against $700 million in 20232.

Almost a point more.

The amounts are small against $13.3 billion of operating income3. But each maturity replaced at a higher rate raises the cost of carrying the balance sheet, and principal and interest obligations total $18,091.9 million4.

Netflix also holds euro notes, €4,700 million at 30 June 20265, which add currency exposure.

Some of the debt is in euros: €4,700 million at 30 June 20266. Because much of Netflix's revenue is in euros, that borrowing partly matches its income, reducing the currency risk even as it adds to the interest bill.

Interest expense ran under 6% of operating income in 20257. It would need to double before it mattered; a large debt-funded acquisition is the only thing likely to make it do so.
