From Burning Cash to Buying Back StockNarrow moat

Netflix (NFLX) — moat facet

Netflix went from burning $2.9 billion a year to returning $9 billion, and walked away from a $72 billion deal rather than overpay.

The strongest sign of a moat is what a business does with its cash, and Netflix's cash has changed direction. It burned money from 2016 to 20191; in 2025 it generated $9,461 million of free cash flow2 and spent $9,127 million on buybacks3. It pays no dividend4.

Nearly every dollar of free cash flow returned.

The balance sheet stayed light through the transition: net debt was $5,244 million at 30 June 20265. That let Netflix bid for Warner Bros. with $59 billion of committed bridge loans6, and walk away when outbid with a $2.8 billion fee7.

Returns followed. Net income was $10,981 million in 20258, a return on average equity of about 43%9, and return on invested capital was 32.6%10.

The risks are in the timing and the temptation. Netflix bought most heavily when its shares were most expensive, and the Warner bid shows it will consider very large deals. Cash taxes and a Brazilian tax dispute have also pulled cash out of the business in 202611.

The turn is visible in the share count. Diluted shares fell from 4,494,966 thousand in 2023 to 4,343,863 thousand in 202512, about 3.4% in two years13. Buybacks were absent in 2019, 2020 and 202214, years when the company was still conserving cash; they are now routine.

The buybacks have not kept equity from rising. Stockholders' equity was $30,152 million at 30 June 2026, against treasury stock of $28,387.7 million15, so Netflix has retired almost as much capital as its current book equity while still growing that equity through retained profit. Total assets were $58,450 million16, against $48.7 billion at the end of 202317.

This facet is narrow rather than wide, because capital allocation is a choice rather than a structure. The falsifying number is free cash flow against net income: 86% in 202518. A fall below two-thirds would mean content cash is running ahead of profits again.
