⚠ Quarterly Margins Swing: 34.1% to 24.5%Low threat

Netflix (NFLX) — threat to the moat

Netflix's quarterly operating margin fell from 34.1% to 24.5% in two quarters and recovered, and the swings hide as much as they reveal.

The annual margin climbs steadily; the quarterly one does not. It was 34.1% in the second quarter of 2025, 28.2% in the third and 24.5% in the fourth, before recovering to 32.3% and 33.4% in the first two quarters of 20261.

A fourth-quarter trough, then a recovery.

Some of that swing is timing: content releases and marketing cluster at the end of the year. Some of it was a charge. The third-quarter 2025 figure absorbed about $619 million of non-income tax expense in Brazil covering several prior years2; without it the quarter's margin would have been about 33.6%3.

The risk is that investors read a timing dip as a turning point, or that a real turning point is dismissed as timing. The fourth quarter of 2025 was the lowest of the five.

The fourth-quarter trough also absorbed about $60 million of bridge-financing costs for the Warner Bros. deal, booked as interest expense4. That cost sits below operating income, so it does not explain the operating margin, but it does show how the quarter was burdened by a transaction that later paid Netflix $2.8 billion5.

The fair test is the full year against the prior one. If 2026 finishes below 29.5%, the swing will have been more than seasonal; the company's own guide is 31.5%.
