◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In

IBM (IBM) — the variant view

IBM has closed its pension gap and its revenue has grown since the Kyndryl spin, yet it trades at 20 times earnings as if both old worries remained.

Two old worries about IBM have quietly been resolved, and the price has not changed much because of either. The first is the pension. IBM transferred about $16 billion of US pension obligations to insurers in September 2022, about $6 billion in September 2024 and about $1.2 billion in Canada in October 20241, roughly $23 billion in all2. The transfers cost settlement charges of $5.9 billion in 2022 and $2.7 billion in 20243. At the end of 2025 defined-benefit obligations of $44,332 million were matched by $44,806 million of assets4; worldwide qualified plans were 116% funded and the US plan 137%5. Non-operating retirement cost fell from $3,457 million in 2024 to $65 million in 20256.

The pension gap has closed.

The second is the shrinking top line. IBM's 2025 revenue of $67,535 million7 is below the $81,741 million of 20158, which looks like a decade of decline. But 2015 included the managed-infrastructure business that became Kyndryl. On the restated basis IBM gives only for 2019 and 2020, continuing revenue was $57,714 million and $55,179 million9; from there it has grown to $67,535 million10.

The market has de-rated IBM anyway. It traded at about 26 times earnings at the end of 202511 and at about 20 times now12, worth $212.46 billion13. Much of that is the mainframe trough; some is a view that the growth is bought.

The free cash flow record is the other part of the case. It was $6.5 billion in 2021 and $9.3 billion in 202214, then $11.2 billion in 2023, $12.7 billion in 2024 and $14.7 billion in 202515. It more than doubled in four years16. At $212.46 billion the shares trade at about 15.41 times trailing free cash flow17, and the dividend yields about 3%18. The average analyst price target is $245.3519.

What is not priced is a company with no pension drag, $14.7 billion of free cash flow in 202520, and a guided increase of about $1 billion for 202621. If that free cash flow arrives near $15.7 billion22 despite the mainframe trough, the July fall will have priced a cycle as if it were a decline.
