⚠ Transaction Processing Fell When the Machine DidModerate threat
IBM (IBM) — threat to the moat
Transaction Processing is sold on the mainframe's timetable, so when the machine stalls the most profitable software stalls with it.
The second quarter of 2026 showed how tightly the software is tied to the box. IBM Z revenue fell 42.0%1 and Transaction Processing revenue fell 8.1 percent2. Chairman Arvind Krishna said the shortfall was "driven by a shortfall in our Z performance and the associated software stack, primarily in Transaction Processing"3.
That link is the weak point of an otherwise strong franchise. Enterprise license agreements are often signed when clients add mainframe capacity, so a slow hardware quarter delays software too. IBM itself calls the transactional part of Software "a capital-sensitive area of the portfolio"4.
The danger is not one bad quarter; it is that software sold on the hardware's cycle is priced like hardware. A buyer that delays a mainframe upgrade to buy servers and memory, as clients did in June5, also delays the licence that comes with it, and IBM has little to offer in between.
The reverse happened in 2025. Transaction Processing grew 2.3 percent as reported but only 0.4 percent at constant currency6, in a year when IBM Z revenue rose 51.7%7. So a record hardware year added little to the software, while a weak hardware quarter took a good deal away. That asymmetry, if it persists, says the software is more exposed to the downturn than it benefits from the upswing, which is the opposite of what an annuity should do.
This stays a moderate threat while the decline is tied to a clear cycle. It becomes a serious one if Transaction Processing is still falling in the second half of 2026, after the z17 comparisons have eased, because that would say the capacity is not coming back.
