◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In
Mastercard (MA) — the variant view
Mastercard is priced like Visa, but it pays its banks more than Visa does on a smaller business, and only its services growth closes the gap.
📈 MA valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →The market prices Mastercard almost exactly like Visa, and on the surface that is fair: the same duopoly, similar margins, similar growth. At $566.08 a share on 24 September 2026 Mastercard was worth $495.89 billion1, about 31 times trailing earnings and 26.6 times forward2. The difference the price does not seem to reflect is on the rebate line.
Mastercard handed $20,522 million back to its bank customers in 20253, more than Visa's $15,751 million4 on a smaller business. Rebates took 51.3% of gross payment network assessments5, and in the second quarter of 2026 they grew 22% against 10% for payment network net revenue6. That is the cost of being the second network in most large markets, and it is rising.
What offsets it is the part of the business that pays no such toll. Value-added services grew 23% in 20257 and reached 41.2% of net revenue in the second quarter of 20268. If services keep growing twice as fast as the network, the rebate drag matters less every year. If they slow, the company's growth falls back to what the network earns after paying the banks.
The market also does not seem to discount the balance sheet change. In the first half of 2026 Mastercard bought back $8,933 million of stock against operating cash flow of $6,772 million, raising $5,596 million of debt9. Buying at about 31 times earnings with borrowed money assumes the multiple holds.
The trade here is a bet on services. The number that would settle it is services' share of net revenue: rising past 45% while the operating margin holds near 60% would justify a Visa-like multiple; stalling near 40% while rebates keep climbing would not.
