The Revenue LinesWide moat

Mastercard (MA) — moat facet

Mastercard is two businesses: a network that hands half its toll back to banks and a services arm that grows twice as fast without doing so.

Mastercard reports its net revenue in two categories, and they are two different kinds of business. Payment network net revenue was $19,476 million in 2025 and value-added services and solutions $13,315 million1, a split of about 59% and 41%2. Both are reported net of the rebates and incentives given to customers, which are attributed to the category they relate to3.

Six-to-four, and moving toward services.

The two grow at different speeds. From 2020 to 2025 payment network net revenue roughly doubled from $9,897 million45, while services grew about 2.5 times from $5,404 million678. In the second quarter of 2026 the network grew 10% and services 20%9.

They also carry different burdens. The payment network's revenue is taken after $20,522 million of rebates in 202510, more than half of its gross assessments11. Services are sold on their own terms, which is why their growth is worth more.

Mastercard has one reportable operating segment12 and does not report operating income by category, so neither line has its own margin. The company-wide operating margin was 57.6% in 202513. Both leaves say so rather than estimating.

The chart in this app shows the two categories from 2020, the first year of the recast presentation; before that Mastercard reported gross revenue by type of fee and a single rebate line, which is not comparable and is described on the rebate pages.

The two lines together are the whole company. The number to follow is the gap between their growth rates, ten points in the latest quarter1415; the wider it stays, the less the network's rising rebates matter.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

The split moves about two points toward services each year.

The balance of the two lines; a share that stops rising would leave the company's growth to the network.
