Mastercard (MA) — threat to the moat

In the latest quarter Mastercard's payments to banks grew more than twice as fast as its own network revenue.

The gap between what Mastercard charges and what it keeps is widening in the latest figures. In the second quarter of 2026 payment network rebates and incentives were $5,997 million, up 22%1, while payment network net revenue grew 10% to $5,451 million2. Over the first half rebates were $11,636 million, also up 22%3.

The share handed back is rising.

The filing attributes rebate growth to growth in the key drivers and to new and renewed deals4. Renewals are the problem: each time a large portfolio comes up, the bank can ask for more, and a network that declines risks losing it to the other one.

If this continued for long, the payment network would grow more slowly than the dollars it carries. Gross dollar volume grew 8% in the second quarter5. Net payment network revenue grew only slightly faster.

The first quarter of 2026 showed the same pattern, which suggests it is not a one-quarter accident. Over the first half payment network rebates were $11,636 million, up 22%6, while payment network net revenue was $10,399 million7. The company attributed the second-quarter increase primarily to growth in the key drivers as well as new and renewed deals8. A half-year in which the refunds exceed the net revenue kept is new; it happened as the network's volume grew at a healthy 8%9.

The warning would be a full year in which payment network net revenue grows more slowly than gross dollar volume. That would mean the network is being paid less per dollar it carries, which is the opposite of what a strengthening moat looks like.
