Equity of $5.6 Billion After $92 Billion of BuybacksWide moat

Mastercard (MA) — moat facet

Mastercard has returned so much cash that its $496 billion business carries only $5.6 billion of book equity.

Mastercard's balance sheet looks strange until you read the treasury stock line. At 30 June 2026 it held Class A treasury stock at a cost of $92,226 million, against retained earnings of $91,771 million, leaving total stockholders' equity of just $5,611 million1. At the end of 2025 equity was $7,737 million2.

Almost everything earned has been handed back.

This is a deliberate choice. A business that needs almost no capital to grow can return nearly everything it earns, and Mastercard has done so for years. In 2025 it paid $2,756 million of dividends and bought back $11,727 million of stock3, together about 88% of free cash flow4.

The side effect is that ratios built on equity become meaningless. Return on equity was 241.20% on a trailing basis in September 20265, and the price-to-book ratio 88.506. Neither says anything useful about the business, only that almost no equity is left on the books.

What matters is that the returns on the capital the business actually uses are enormous. Capital spending on property and capitalised software was $1,215 million in 20257, about 3.7% of net revenue8.

The authorisations show the policy is not slowing. The board authorised repurchases of up to $14.0 billion in December 2025 and $12.0 billion a year earlier9, and about $7.8 billion remained available at the end of July 202610. The dividend is small by comparison: $0.87 a quarter from 202611, a yield of 0.61% at the September 2026 price12. Mastercard returns capital overwhelmingly by buying its own shares, which makes the price it pays the most important capital allocation decision it makes.

The ratio worth tracking is buybacks against free cash flow. As long as the company returns less than it generates, the thin equity is a sign of strength; once it borrows to return more, it becomes a sign of something else.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Returns continue at about 88% of free cash flow, but the first half of 2026 was financed with debt.

Stockholders' equity, latest quarter
$5,611M (30 June 2026); $7,737M at end-2025

The residue left after buybacks; equity falling because debt funds the buybacks would change the story.
