⚠ Some of the Growth Is PriceModerate threat
Mastercard (MA) — threat to the moat
Part of Mastercard's services growth is price and part is purchased, and neither can be repeated indefinitely.
Services growth is not all new demand. Pricing is one of the five drivers Mastercard lists for the 23% growth in 20251, and acquisitions contributed about three percentage points2.
Pricing on services sold to banks has limits. The same issuers that negotiate rebates on the network buy fraud tools and analytics, and they can bundle the two negotiations. The filing warns of pressure on prices and disintermediation3.
Acquired growth has a different limit: it has to be bought again each year to be repeated. Recorded Future cost $2.7 billion4.
None of this makes services growth illusory. A business that can raise its prices to banks that also negotiate hard on rebates has something the banks value. But growth that combines volume, price and acquisitions deserves a lower multiple than growth that is purely new demand. Services grew 20% in the second quarter of 20265 with the acquisitions largely in both years, which is the better evidence that the organic rate is still high.
Organic, currency-neutral services growth excluding price is not disclosed, which is itself the point. The number to watch is services growth minus acquisitions; a fall toward the low teens would say price and purchases had been doing much of the work.
