The Cost of Capital, Which Just FellNarrow moat
Kioxia Holdings (285A) — moat facet
In a business this capital-intensive the cost of money is part of the cost of goods, and Kioxia's was repriced from speculative to investment grade in one year.
In a capital-intensive commodity business the cost of money is part of the cost of goods, and Kioxia's has just been repriced.
The starting point was poor. At March 2025 net interest-bearing debt was ¥931,035 million against ¥737,565 million of equity — 1.26 times1 — and the company had issued dollar senior notes at 6.25% and 6.625%2. That is a rate paid by a borrower the market regards as speculative, on a balance sheet levered into a cyclical industry.
Then the cycle turned. Net debt to equity fell to 0.39 times by March 20263, ¥407.5 billion of senior loans were repaid, and the company reached a net cash position of ¥186.7 billion in the June 2026 quarter with an equity ratio of 51%4. In May 2026, S&P and Fitch upgraded Kioxia to investment grade at BBB−5.
The practical effect is that the next fab is cheaper to finance than the last one, and the next downturn is survivable at a lower cash cost. For a producer whose competitors include a conglomerate division and a state-backed enterprise, that gap was a genuine disadvantage and is now smaller.
The caution is that ratings follow cycles. BBB− was earned at a 75% operating margin and is one bad year from being reconsidered.
The number to watch is net debt to equity through the next trough, not this peak.
Net debt to equity went from 1.26 times at March 2025 to net cash by June 2026, ¥407.5bn of senior loans were repaid, and S&P and Fitch moved Kioxia to investment grade in May 2026. In a capital-intensive commodity business that is a genuine cost improvement.
Kioxia reached investment grade in May 2026 and has since repaid its senior loans. Staying in net cash keeps borrowing costs low for the next build-out; returning to heavy debt would raise them.
