Kioxia Holdings (285A) — threat to the moat

Retooling during a shortage means declining revenue at the best prices the industry has ever seen; not retooling means carrying an old cost base into the bust.

The cost of a node transition is not only the capital. It is the output foregone while the fab is being converted.

The worst moment to retool is the moment the output is worth most.

That makes the timing decision genuinely difficult, and it is at its hardest exactly now. Converting capacity during a shortage means declining revenue at the best prices the industry has ever seen; not converting means carrying an older cost base into the downturn that follows. Kioxia has committed to concentrated investment in the tenth and eleventh generations1 while its operating margin sits near 75%2.

The bit-shipment number gives the game away: growth in the June quarter was low single digit3, which is what a producer looks like when its capacity is constrained and partly in transition.

What limits the damage is that the industry converts together — everyone's supply is constrained by the same process, which is part of why prices are where they are.

The falsifier is bit shipments failing to accelerate once the current transitions are through. If the capacity arrives and the volume does not, the constraint was never the fab.
