Kioxia Holdings (285A) — threat to the moat
The last time this decision came round, net debt was 1.26 times equity and the notes were priced at over six percent -- the budget was a negotiation with lenders.
The decision to keep spending through the last downturn was possible; it was not comfortable.
At March 2025 Kioxia's net interest-bearing debt was ¥931,035 million against equity of ¥737,565 million — a ratio of 1.26 times1. A company that levered, in a business that cyclical, with one product, is a company whose research budget is a negotiation with its lenders. It issued dollar senior notes at 6.25% and 6.625%2, which is the price of that position.
The position has been transformed: net debt to equity fell to 0.39 times by March 20263 and to net cash in the June 2026 quarter after ¥407.5 billion of senior loans were repaid4, and the credit rating was upgraded to investment grade in May 20265.
The point of the threat is not that the balance sheet is weak. It is that it was weak two years ago and the cycle is not over. A producer that has just spent its windfall on buybacks and capacity has less room the next time.
Watch net debt to equity through the next downturn. Kioxia has proved it can spend through one bust with a levered balance sheet; whether it would choose to again is the open question.
