Ferrari (RACE) — moat facet

Ferrari built a paint shop so it could charge more for paint, and it worked well enough to raise guidance twice.

Ferrari raised its 2026 outlook citing personalisation. It is the purest form of price: the same car, more money, no additional car.

The 2024–25 capital programme included a new paint shop at Maranello "which will allow us to satisfy further personalizations in-house," capable of painting aluminium and carbon-fibre parts simultaneously, with the aesthetic black finishes applied at the end of the process.1 It earned LEED Platinum certification, which Ferrari notes is exceptional for industrial manufacturing.2

Read commercially, this is a capacity investment in margin rather than in volume. Every personalisation done outside costs Ferrari a supplier's markup and a scheduling constraint; every one brought in-house captures the full price and shortens the lead time. It is the physical infrastructure behind the line that has been driving the revenue growth.

The same logic runs through the e-Building, a flexible production line designed to build internal-combustion, hybrid and fully electric models on the same floor.3 Ferrari is not building a second factory for electric cars; it is building one line that can make whatever the mix turns out to be.

That flexibility is worth more than it sounds given the company has already revised its 2030 powertrain mix once.4

The measure is capital expenditure against shipments. Ferrari is spending to make each car worth more, not to make more of them.

Moat trajectory: Widening

New Tailor Made centres in Tokyo and Los Angeles extend the highest-value configuration programme into two of the most important markets, and personalisation was the stated reason for both guidance raises.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Net revenue guidance, 2026
~€7.60B, raised from ~€7.50B

Ferrari raised its guidance because customers are spending more than expected on personalisation. A further raise would show the trend continuing; a cut, that personalisation is fading.
