Fabric & Home CareWide moat

Procter & Gamble (PG) — moat facet

Fabric & Home Care earns more than a third of P&G's profit from laundry and cleaning, and P&G built almost all of it rather than bought it.

Fabric & Home Care is P&G's largest segment by every measure. It sold $30,314 million in fiscal 2026, up 2%, and earned $7,290 million before tax and $5,632 million after1. It was 35% of P&G's net sales and 35% of its net earnings2.

From a quarter of the profit to over a third.

What is inside is laundry and household cleaning. Fabric care, with Ariel, Downy, Gain and Tide, was 23% of P&G's net sales; home care, with Cascade, Dawn, Fairy, Febreze, Mr. Clean and Swiffer, 12%3. P&G says it is the global leader in fabric care with over 35% share in the markets where it competes, and holds more than 30% of home care4. It makes these products at 34 sites, more than any other segment5.

The history is steady gains in weight. Fabric & Home Care was 32% of P&G's net sales and 27% of its net earnings in fiscal 20166, 33% and 29% in fiscal 20197, and 35% and 31% in fiscal 20228. As other segments' margins fell, laundry became the company's anchor.

How it is paid: through mass merchandisers, grocery, club and online retailers9, in products bought every few weeks.

Profitability improved sharply after fiscal 2023. Net earnings rose from $4,828 million in fiscal 2023 to $5,687 million in fiscal 2024 and $5,848 million in fiscal 2025, then fell to $5,632 million in fiscal 20261011. The net margin went from 17.0% in fiscal 202312 to 18.6% in fiscal 2026, down 110 basis points in the last year13. The pre-tax margin was about 24.0%14.

Growth has been slow and price-led. Sales rose 4% in fiscal 2024, with price up 3%, were flat in fiscal 2025, and rose 2% in fiscal 2026 with volume flat and price up 1%151617; organic sales rose 1%18. Fabric care share fell 0.4 points on competitive activity in Europe while home care rose 0.319. In the June 2026 quarter sales rose 1% to $7,432 million, organic sales were flat and net earnings fell 10%20.

The outlook is a slow, reliable earner. Fabric & Home Care carries only $1,838 million of goodwill21, because P&G built most of it rather than bought it, and spent $1,250 million on capital in fiscal 202622.

The scale of the segment shows in its cost lines. Depreciation and amortisation was $756 million and restructuring charges $220 million in fiscal 20262324. Depreciation was second only to Baby, Feminine & Family Care and the restructuring charge the largest of any segment, yet the segment still earned the largest pre-tax profit, $7,290 million25, because its sales base is a third of the company.

This is P&G's widest line. The view changes if fabric care share kept falling in Europe and began falling in North America, because a segment that earns more than a third of P&G's profit cannot lose share in both of its largest regions without the whole company's earnings following.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Sales +2% in FY2026; fabric share -0.4pt (Europe), home care +0.3pt.

The profitability of P&G's largest business; a fall back toward 17% would undo the gains since fiscal 2023.
