Unilever, Colgate and Kimberly-Clark: Peers a Fraction of the SizeNarrow moat
Procter & Gamble (PG) — moat facet
P&G is worth more than Unilever, Colgate, Kimberly-Clark and four other peers combined, and still loses a half point of share to rivals it will not name.
The consumer-goods companies grouped with P&G by market data providers are all much smaller. On 25 September 2026 Unilever was worth $132.99 billion, Colgate-Palmolive $68.60 billion, Kenvue $34.19 billion, Estee Lauder $34.18 billion, Kimberly-Clark $32.74 billion, Church & Dwight $22.86 billion and Clorox $10.13 billion1. Together that is $335.69 billion2, less than P&G's $339.64 billion3.
Size matters in this industry because the costs that decide it are fixed: research, advertising and a network of plants. P&G spreads them across $87,032 million of sales4 and takes 180 basis points of productivity out of its gross margin in a year5. A smaller rival spending the same share of sales on advertising has a smaller absolute budget in every category they share.
Size does not stop the peers winning locally. P&G's 10-K attributes fiscal 2026 volume losses to competitive activity in eight categories6, and hair care share fell 0.5 points in North America7. The company names no rival for any of it.
Nor has size protected the share price. Over five years to June 2026, $100 in P&G stock grew to $123, against $145 for the S&P 500 Consumer Staples index8, an index in which several of these peers sit.
P&G measures itself against these peers. Its stated aim is total shareholder return "in the top one-third of our peer group"9. Relative market value is the simplest daily read on that contest, and on 25 September 2026 P&G was worth about 2.6 times Unilever101112.
Put plainly, the peers compete head-on, and none can match P&G's reach, but they can take a half point in a category and hold it. The measure is relative market value, which moves every day; P&G falling below the combined value of these seven would say investors expect them to grow faster than the leader.
P&G worth $339.6bn against $335.7bn for seven peers combined.
The market's view of relative strength; P&G falling below the combined peers would mean it expects them to outgrow the leader.
