The Copper Smelters, Where Barrick Will Have Real CustomersNarrow moat
Barrick Mining (B) — moat facet
Concentrate is sold under negotiated multi-year offtake to a small number of smelters -- the first customer relationship this company will ever have had.
Copper is a different commercial business from gold, and it is the reason the company changed its name from Barrick Gold to Barrick Mining in 2025.
A copper mine does not produce metal. It produces concentrate, which has to be shipped to a smelter, and smelters are large, expensive, few in number and heavily concentrated in Asia. That makes copper sales a genuine commercial relationship: multi-year offtake agreements, negotiated treatment and refining charges, freight terms, penalties for impurities, and counterparties who can be named. For the first time in its history, Barrick will have customers in the sense the rest of this collection understands the word.
That is an improvement in visibility and a new form of exposure. Contracted volume is more predictable than selling into a spot benchmark. It also introduces counterparty concentration Barrick has never carried, and treatment charges that are themselves negotiated annually and have swung violently as global smelting capacity has expanded.
The scale is arriving slowly. The Lumwana Super Pit lifts throughput from 27 to 52 million tonnes and copper output from about 120,000 to 240,000 tonnes a year with a thirty-year life, and first copper is expected at the end of the first quarter of 20281. Reko Diq, the far larger prize, was slowed in 2026 on security concerns.
The number to watch is contracted copper volume as a share of production. It is the first customer relationship this company will ever have had.
The copper that smelters buy today; Lumwana's expansion would roughly double it.
