◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) — the variant view
The market is paying for the cyclical hardware boom and getting the compounding services annuity almost for free.
📈 VRT valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →The market sees Vertiv clearly as an AI-hardware growth story: it prices the explosive revenue, the doubling backlog, the surging orders, and the liquid-cooling lead, and it still prices the stock at roughly 56 times earnings1 on the strength of them. That framing is not wrong — the hardware boom is real and enormous. But it may be missing, or underweighting, the quieter and more durable thing happening underneath: every dollar of equipment Vertiv ships in this boom is seeding years of future high-margin, recurring service revenue, and the installed base that annuity rides on is being built at an unprecedented rate. The market is paying for the cyclical hardware growth; it may be getting, almost for free, a much larger future services annuity.
This matters because the two halves of Vertiv have very different characters. The hardware is cyclical, competitive, and priced on the AI-capex cycle; the services annuity is recurring, high-margin, switching-cost-protected, and far less cyclical. As the record equipment sales of today's build-out convert over the coming years into a vastly larger base of serviceable, contracted infrastructure, the mix of Vertiv's business should shift toward the more annuity-like, more defensible, higher-quality revenue — which would justify a steadier, higher-quality multiple than a pure cyclical deserves. The bull case that the market underweights is not just that the hardware boom continues, but that it leaves behind a durable services franchise that keeps earning long after any single cycle turns.
There is a second, subtler point the market may underprice: the operating leverage. Vertiv's adjusted operating margins have climbed steadily — from the mid-teens a few years ago toward the low twenties — as volume, mix shift toward higher-value systems and services, and manufacturing scale all compound. A specialist industrial growing revenue at 30% while expanding margins is a powerful earnings machine, and if the mix continues shifting toward cooling, integrated systems, and services, the margin trajectory has further to run. The bears are right that the valuation is rich and the cycle is a risk; the bulls' underappreciated point is that beneath the cyclical hardware headline, Vertiv is quietly building a larger, higher-margin, more recurring, and more defensible business than the AI-hardware framing captures — and that is what the market may not be fully pricing in.
None of this resolves the core tension. If the AI-capex cycle turns hard, even a growing services annuity will not spare a stock priced for continued compounding from a painful de-rating. But the honest insight is that the market's framing — Vertiv as a cyclical AI-hardware bet — is incomplete, and that the compounding services annuity and the expanding margins underneath it are a real, durable source of value that the hardware headline obscures.
