The Power FranchiseNarrow moat
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) — moat facet
In power, reliability is the moat and trust is earned over decades — which is also exactly where Vertiv meets its biggest rivals head-on.
At the base of Vertiv's stack is power: the uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), switchgear, busway, and power-distribution units that guarantee a data center's computers never lose clean electricity. This is one of Vertiv's oldest and strongest franchises, inherited from the Emerson and Liebert heritage1, and it is a business where reliability is paramount and trust is earned over decades. A UPS system stands between the utility grid and the servers; if it fails during an outage or a switchover, the whole facility can go dark and a hyperscaler can lose millions. Customers therefore buy from names they trust, specify equipment they have run before, and value the engineering, quality, and service record behind the box far more than they value a slightly lower price.
That reliability-first dynamic is the source of the moat in power. It creates real switching costs and real preference for an incumbent with a proven installed base, and it rewards scale in engineering and manufacturing. The AI build-out has driven power density and total power demand sharply higher, expanding the market and pushing Vertiv toward larger, more integrated, higher-voltage power systems for GPU-dense facilities. The proviso is that power equipment is also where Vertiv meets its strongest, largest competitors head-on — Schneider Electric and Eaton are electrical-power giants — so this is a franchise defended by reputation, reliability, and installed base rather than by any monopoly on the technology.
Stable. Reliability-first UPS/switchgear/distribution is a trusted, installed-base-defended franchise — but power is exactly where Vertiv meets its largest rivals (Schneider, Eaton) head-on, so it holds firm rather than pulls ahead.
The Liebert power business is the core of Vertiv's product sales, most of it in North American data centres. Growth there shows the franchise keeping pace with the build-out.
