✦ The Prefab Turn: Data Halls as ProductsThin moat
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) — the future bets
Being inside Nvidia's reference drawings is the entire bet — and a factory-built data hall is also the easiest thing Vertiv sells to put out to bid.
AI capacity is bottlenecked less by chips than by construction: skilled electricians, permitting, and the eighteen months it takes to build a conventional data hall. The industry's response is to move the work into factories, and Vertiv is selling exactly that — MegaMod CoolChip, a prefabricated modular data center integrating direct-to-chip liquid cooling with the power and thermal plant, delivered as multi-megawatt units rather than assembled on site1. Alongside it, the company's converged infrastructure was designed into Nvidia's Vera Rubin DSX reference architecture and the Omniverse DSX blueprint2 — meaning Vertiv's equipment appears in the drawings customers start from.
The economics of that are better than they look. A prefabricated hall converts a lumpy engineering-and-construction business into something closer to manufacturing — repeatable, factory-costed, faster to deploy — and it sells the whole stack together rather than letting customers shop power and cooling separately. For hyperscalers racing to energize gigawatts, weeks saved are worth more than dollars saved.
The risk is the oldest one in this company's history: integrated modular systems are also the most commoditizable thing Vertiv makes, because a module is easy to specify and therefore easy to bid out. Watch whether prefabricated deployments carry Vertiv's corporate gross margin or dilute it, and watch how many AI-factory reference designs keep naming Vertiv as the physical-infrastructure partner. Being in the blueprint is the whole bet; being in the blueprint at a discount would be a different business entirely.
Being written into Nvidia's DSX blueprints is genuine placement, and factory-built halls sell speed the hyperscalers value above price. But modular systems are the most commoditizable thing this company makes — easy to specify, easy to bid out. Holding steady until prefabricated deployments prove they carry corporate gross margin rather than diluting it.
Prefabricated data halls specified inside Nvidia's reference designs could become standard products sold on price. A margin that keeps rising says Vertiv is still paid for integration; a falling margin would show commoditisation.
