The GPU Density ProblemNarrow moat
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) — moat facet
As long as AI chips keep getting denser and hotter, the pull toward liquid cooling only intensifies — a structural tailwind, not a cyclical one.
The structural reason liquid cooling has become unavoidable is the sheer power density of AI computing. A traditional server rack might draw a few kilowatts; a rack packed with AI accelerators can draw ten or twenty times that — a concentration of heat in a small space that air, however vigorously moved, cannot carry away fast enough. Past a certain density, fans and chilled air hit a physical wall: the heat is simply too concentrated. The only practical answer is to bring liquid — which carries heat far more efficiently than air — directly to the source, either piped to cold plates on the chips or immersing the hardware entirely.
This is the tailwind that turned Vertiv's cooling business from a steady franchise into a growth engine, and it is structural, not cyclical in nature: as long as AI chips keep getting denser and more power-hungry — which is the direction of the entire industry — the need for liquid cooling only intensifies. Each new generation of accelerators raises the thermal challenge and pulls more of the data center toward liquid. For a company that leads in exactly this discipline, the density problem is a durable source of demand. The caveat is that a structural tailwind lifts the whole field, competitors included — the density problem creates the market — a market that grew Vertiv 28% in a year1 — but it does not by itself decide who wins it.
Widening — and structural, not cyclical. Each denser generation of AI chips pushes more of the data center past air's limits toward liquid, a durable source of demand for the cooling leader. But the same tide lifts every rival too.
Denser AI racks show up first as Americas demand; organic growth falling toward the company's pre-AI rate would mean density has stopped driving it.
