✦ 800 Volts & the Nvidia SpecificationNarrow moat
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) — the future bets
Past 300 kilowatts a rack, alternating current runs out of copper — and the supplier who was in the room when Nvidia wrote the replacement gets two good years.
The most consequential change in data-center electrics in decades is happening because of a physical limit: past roughly 300 kilowatts a rack, delivering power as alternating current means impractical amounts of copper and unacceptable thermal loss. Nvidia's answer was to specify 800-volt direct current for its next AI factories, and Vertiv moved immediately to build the matching portfolio — centralized rectifiers, high-efficiency DC busways and rack-level DC-DC converters, with the platform scheduled to release in the second half of 2026, ahead of the Kyber and Rubin Ultra rollouts1. The designs are being performance-tested against gigawatt-scale projects already in early design2.
For a components company, being early to a mandated architecture change is the best thing that can happen. Every previous generation of Vertiv's power gear competes on price against Schneider and Eaton doing much the same thing; a new architecture resets that race and rewards whoever the platform vendor actually designed alongside. It also drags Vertiv up the value chain, from selling boxes toward selling the electrical topology of a building.
The caution is that a specification is not a moat. Nvidia published the architecture openly precisely so that many suppliers would build to it, and Vertiv's two larger rivals have the same documents and deeper electrical-engineering benches. Watch two things through 2027: whether the 800 VDC portfolio ships on schedule in the second half of 2026, and what share of announced AI-factory projects name Vertiv in their power chain. Being first is worth a great deal for two years; after that it is worth whatever the pricing says it is.
An architecture change resets a race Vertiv was otherwise running on price, and being early to a mandated standard drags the company from selling boxes toward selling a building's electrical topology. Widening for as long as the head start lasts. Watch the 2H 2026 ship date and how many AI-factory projects name Vertiv in their power chain.
The 800 VDC portfolio is due in the second half of 2026, ahead of Nvidia's next rack generation. Guidance that holds through that launch says the transition is adding to earnings rather than disrupting orders.
