The Revenue LinesNarrow moat
Marubeni (8002) — moat facet
Marubeni's revenue is mostly food and its profit is mostly metals and finance, so the revenue chart and the profit chart describe different companies.
Marubeni reports ten operating segments, and the revenue and profit tables tell different stories. In the year to March 2026 Food & Agri Business was ¥3,720.5 billion of the company's ¥8,265.8 billion of revenue, 45%, and earned ¥81.5 billion of net profit1. Finance, Leasing & Real Estate had revenue of just ¥24.6 billion and earned ¥162.0 billion2. Metals & Mineral Resources earned ¥134.3 billion, mostly through its share of associates' profits3.
For that reason these pages follow net profit by segment rather than revenue. The chart has seven bands: the six largest profit segments, each with its own page, and a band for Lifestyle, IT Solutions, the two Next Generation segments and corporate items. Lifestyle, which includes textiles, paper, B-Quik car maintenance and the docomo shop agency, earned ¥25.9 billion; IT Solutions ¥5.4 billion; Next Generation Business Development ¥19.6 billion, largely pharmaceuticals; Next Generation Corporate Development a loss of ¥1.7 billion; and Other a loss of ¥7.7 billion4. Together, including Lifestyle, they were ¥41.5 billion in the latest year once the corporate losses are netted5.
The segments were reorganised from sixteen to ten from the year to March 2026, with the prior year restated6. The year to March 2024 exists only on the old basis, so only two years are comparable.
The measure that ties the pages together is net profit over segment assets. It ranges from about 2% in Energy & Chemicals to about 16% in Finance, Leasing & Real Estate in a year flattered by a gain7, and the company's growth depends on which end of that range the new capital goes to.
Two comparable years only; the mix shifted toward finance through a one-off gain and toward metals through copper prices.
Profit and revenue barely correlate across segments; the finance segment's profit falling to the forecast ¥76.0 billion would restore the usual order.
