No Customer Worth NamingWide moat

Marubeni (8002) — moat facet

No buyer can squeeze Marubeni, and its real concentration is in one foreign country rather than one customer.

Marubeni's financial results contain no statement that any customer accounts for a tenth of revenue, and its risk framework describes monitoring to ensure no concentration of concerning risks across more than 600 sectors1. Revenue of ¥8,265.8 billion2 is spread across fertiliser, food, copper cathode, fuel, power, aircraft leases and IT services.

Gross risk exposure by country, March 2026 (¥ bn)Japan1,563.5United States1,368.3Chile677.2Australia450.7Indonesia262.2Total ¥6,019.6bn; Marubeni Integrated Report 2026
No named customer, and the United States almost as large as Japan.

This is a structural advantage over companies such as chipmakers or contract manufacturers that depend on a handful of buyers. Marubeni cannot be squeezed on price by one customer, and it cannot lose a year's profit to one cancelled contract.

The concentration it does have is geographic. The United States, at ¥1,368.3 billion of gross exposure, is almost as large as Japan at ¥1,563.5 billion3, which means American farm incomes, used-car credit and power prices matter nearly as much as Japan's economy.

What Marubeni sells is also diverse in kind. In the latest year its ¥8,265.8 billion of revenue came from sales of goods and from commissions on services and trading margins45; in the April-June 2026 quarter commissions and margins were ¥55,805 million of ¥2,609,225 million6. A trading house's customers pay mostly for goods delivered, with fees a small part.

The measure is the country exposure table. If one foreign country passes Japan, Marubeni's clients will have concentrated even if no single one did.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

No customer concentration is disclosed in any year; the United States exposure is close to Japan's.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Gross risk exposure to the United States against Japan
¥1,368.3bn against ¥1,563.5bn, March 2026

The client base is diversified by name and increasingly concentrated by country; the United States passing Japan would mark the shift.
