⚠ A Thin Margin on the Largest LineModerate threat
Marubeni (8002) — threat to the moat
Food & Agri holds more assets than the mining segment and earns less than two-thirds as much on them.
The Food & Agri segment is the company's revenue engine and a small part of its profit. On ¥3,720,523 million of revenue it earned ¥81,461 million1, about 2.2%2. Its assets of ¥2,700,620 million3 earned about 3.0%4.
Distribution businesses are thin by nature, and Marubeni's defence is that the segment turns over its capital quickly. But a segment that ties up more assets than Metals & Mineral Resources and earns less than half as much is the part of the portfolio most exposed to a merchant with a cheaper cost of capital.
The comparison with the other large segments is stark. Finance, Leasing & Real Estate earned about 15.9% on its assets in the same year and Metals & Mineral Resources about 8.2%5. Food & Agri holds ¥2,700,620 million of assets6, more than either, and its forecast net profit for the year to March 2027 is ¥88.0 billion7.
The measure is return on segment assets. A move above 4% would say the portfolio changes, Helena's growth and the food manufacturing acquisitions, are working.
