⚠ Operating Profit Fell While Net Profit RoseModerate threat

Marubeni (8002) — threat to the moat

Marubeni's record year was carried by associates and one-off gains while its own operations earned less.

Marubeni's record net profit of ¥543.9 billion in the year to March 2026 came in a year when its operating profit fell 5.7% to ¥256.7 billion1, from ¥272.3 billion2. The difference was made up by associates, whose share of profit rose to ¥338.3 billion3, and by one-time items of about ¥64 billion4.

Three years of decline in the part of the business Marubeni runs.

The operating decline was concentrated. Power & Infrastructure Services reported an operating loss of ¥25.1 billion, Energy & Chemicals' net profit fell from ¥86.2 billion to ¥23.2 billion, and SmartestEnergy's profit fell by two-thirds56. The prior year's Energy result had included a ¥45.7 billion realised foreign exchange gain from the end of a Qatar LNG project7.

The businesses Marubeni runs itself are, in aggregate, earning less than a year ago, while the businesses it owns stakes in are earning more. That is the opposite of what the strategy of building operating platforms intends.

The longer series shows the decline is not new. Operating profit was ¥340.8 billion in the year to March 2023, ¥276.3 billion in 2024, ¥272.3 billion in 2025 and ¥256.7 billion in 20268. Selling, general and administrative expenses rose from ¥862,994 million to ¥913,596 million in the latest year9, faster than gross trading profit.

The measure is operating profit. The April-June 2026 quarter's rose 54.7% to ¥132.1 billion10; if the full year confirms the recovery, the decline was a single bad year.
