Dino Polska (DNP) — threat to the moat

Dino's moat is a location relative to a trip. Replace the trip and the location stops mattering.

The convenience chain opened four stores for every one Dino opened.

The format assumes a customer who drives a short distance for a substantial basket. Two things could unpick that. Grocery delivery removes the drive entirely, and Dino's towns are exactly the low-density places delivery has historically served worst — which is a defence, though a shrinking one. Convenience formats fragment the trip into smaller, more frequent visits, and Zabka added 1 394 stores in 2025 doing precisely that.

Dino's own online presence in food is negligible. The group's internet business is eZebra, a cosmetics retailer whose goodwill is tested as a separate internet-sales cash-generating unit1 — a different category, not a grocery hedge.

The company is not blind to this; it simply has not needed an answer yet, because the towns it serves are the last places these shifts arrive — and because nearly half of what it sells is fresh2, the category shoppers have been slowest to hand to a delivery van.

Watch the frequency of visits rather than revenue. A trip being replaced shows up as fewer transactions before it shows up in sales, because the remaining baskets get larger for a while first.
