Biedronka: Four Times the Size, in Different TownsThin moat

Dino Polska (DNP) — moat facet

The dominant grocer in Poland has never had to answer Dino, because the two have mostly not been in the same places.

Biedronka is the dominant fact of Polish grocery and has been for two decades.

Dino is closing on Biedronka's store count with shops a fraction of the size, in towns Biedronka skipped.

Owned by Jeronimo Martins, it holds roughly a quarter of the entire Polish grocery market and is approaching its four-thousandth store — against Dino's 3 1761 on a fraction of the revenue. On any measure of scale, purchasing power or brand recognition, Biedronka is ahead, and it has not been standing still while Dino grew.

The reason it has not stopped Dino is format economics rather than complacency. A Biedronka store is materially larger than 400 square metres2 and carries the cost base of a national discounter. That store needs a catchment Dino's towns cannot provide. The range follows the floor: Dino stocks about five thousand items3 where a store of Biedronka's size carries several times more — and a wider range needs more customers through the door to pay for itself, which is the same constraint stated from the other end. Where both are present, Biedronka generally wins on price and range; the point is that in a large number of Dino's locations, Biedronka is not present.

This is the most important competitive fact about Dino and the most fragile. It depends on Biedronka continuing to judge those catchments unattractive — a judgment Dino has spent a decade publicly disproving.

Grade this on whether Biedronka introduces a smaller format. Store openings in towns it already serves are routine; a deliberately smaller concept aimed at communities of a few thousand people would be the first direct attack on Dino's position.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Biedronka keeps building the format it already has toward 4 000 stores. It has not announced the smaller concept that would be the actual threat.

About 25%, approaching 4 000 stores

The dominant operator, and it has never had to respond to Dino because the two are largely not in the same places. Watch for a smaller Biedronka format rather than for more Biedronka stores.
