Tesla (TSLA) — threat to the moat

In the market that sets the global pace, Tesla is behind.

The catch-up race is not a single global contest but several regional ones, and in the most important — China, the world's largest EV market — Tesla appears to be losing. BYD and a field of aggressive domestic makers have matched or beaten Tesla on cost, technology, and features, and have driven Tesla's share and pricing power in China steadily down. A company overtaken in the market that sets the global pace for electric vehicles cannot claim its manufacturing lead is secure.

China's electric market grew 18% in 2025 while Tesla's sales there fell 4.8%.

The danger is that China is not a contained problem. Its makers export aggressively into Europe and the developing world, carrying their lower cost base into Tesla's other markets, and the pace of Chinese innovation raises the global bar every year. Trade barriers slow but do not stop this, and they leave Tesla defending share behind tariffs rather than on merit — a precarious position for a company whose story is technological superiority.

Tesla's counter is that it remains dominant in North America, strong in parts of Europe, and ahead on software and autonomy in ways raw cost misses — and that a cheaper next-generation platform can restore its competitiveness. Those are real. But an owner should weigh honestly that in the arena that most determines the future of the electric car, Tesla's manufacturing and cost lead has not merely narrowed but, by most measures, been surrendered — the single strongest evidence that the catch-up race is going against Tesla's core car business — BYD has passed it in global EV sales1.
