Tesla (TSLA) — the future bets
The biggest product Tesla might ever make is a line still being installed where the Model S used to be — and its first robots will train in Tesla's own academy.
Musk calls Optimus potentially Tesla's biggest product, and the claim finally has hardware: the third-generation design, with hands offering 22 degrees of freedom, was slated to debut in mid-20261. Tesla has decommissioned the Model S and X lines at Fremont and is installing Optimus's first-generation lines there, with production expected later this year; the initial builds will go to Tesla's own Optimus Academy for training-data collection, not to customers2. The capacity ambitions — a first line planned at a million units a year, and a long-term design capacity of up to ten million at Giga Texas3 — remain plans.
The bet's economics would be extraordinary if the product works: a useful humanoid at car-like prices sold in car-like volumes would dwarf the automotive business. But the funding comes from a car company whose free cash flow was negative by $1.1 billion in the second quarter of 20264, and a robot built for a training academy earns nothing. Watch units produced (not demonstrated), the first paid external deployment, and whether the production start promised for this year survives contact with manufacturing reality.
Holding at the starting line: the third generation exists and Fremont's old Model S and X lines are being replaced with Optimus lines, with production expected later in 2026 and the first builds going to Tesla's own training academy. The arrow moves when units leave the factory for someone else's payroll.
Optimus has no revenue line, so its cost shows up in R&D alongside AI training and the Cybercab. Construction of the Fremont Optimus line began after the Model S and X lines were decommissioned, with production expected later in 2026. R&D still rising with no robot revenue a year from now would say the bet is still pre-commercial.
