Tesla (TSLA) — threat to the moat

BYD and the subsidized Chinese field set prices Tesla cannot profitably match.

For years Tesla had the compelling-EV market nearly to itself; that era is emphatically over. BYD has overtaken Tesla in global EV volumes1 and sells capable electric cars at prices Tesla struggles to match; the legacy automakers have flooded the market with credible EVs backed by vast dealer and service networks; and a swarm of Chinese makers, nurtured by an enormous domestic supply chain, competes ferociously on cost. The competitive moat around Tesla's core car business is far shallower than it was.

Tesla revenue from China ($B)$6.7B2020$13.8B2021$18.1B2022$21.7B2023$20.9B2024$21.0B2025By sales location; Tesla 10-Ks FY2022 and FY2025
China revenue tripled to 2023 and has not grown since, while the Chinese NEV market grew 18% in 2025 alone.

The Chinese challenge is the sharpest edge of this. Companies like BYD are vertically integrated, subsidized, and operating in the world's largest EV market, and they have driven prices to levels that pressure everyone, Tesla included. Tesla has already ceded its lead in China, faces tariffs and political friction that cut both ways in different markets, and must now win on merit against rivals who have matched much of what once made it special. Being first is no longer being alone.

Tesla's answers are cost leadership, cheaper next-generation models, its brand and charging network, and the bet that autonomy leapfrogs the whole contest. Some of those are real advantages. But an owner should recognize that the car business has become a genuine dogfight, that Tesla's share and pricing power in it are under sustained assault, and that the comfortable near-monopoly on desirable EVs which underwrote its rise has given way to a crowded, brutal, and increasingly price-driven market.
