On Both Airframers' AircraftNarrow moat
RTX (RTX) — moat facet
Collins sells to both airframers, to airlines and to governments, so no single aircraft or customer decides its year.
Collins is spread across the fleet in a way Pratt & Whitney is not. Its largest customers, Boeing and Airbus, bought 16% of Collins's segment sales before discounts in both 2025 and 2024, down from 19% in 20231. Pratt & Whitney's largest commercial customer, Airbus alone, was 29% of its sales in 20252.
The reason is the product range. Collins supplies electric power systems, environmental controls, flight controls, avionics, landing gear, brakes, cabin interiors and nacelles3, so it has content on both airframers' narrowbodies and widebodies, on business jets and on military aircraft. It does not have to win the engine contest on any aircraft to be on it.
That spread is also why its aftermarket customers are diverse. The organic growth in 2025 came from "higher volume across all aftermarket sales channels"4, and from widebody and narrowbody original equipment together.
The defence side adds balance. Collins sold $7,061 million to the U.S. government and $1,230 million directly to foreign governments in 20255, so about 32% of its external sales went to governments, counting foreign military sales6.
The balance also runs across the product cycle. Collins's services revenue was $6,118 million in 2025 against $21,467 million of products7, a services share of about 22% of external sales8, half Pratt & Whitney's. Most of Collins's income comes from selling products, new or spare, rather than from long service contracts.
Diversity has a price: Collins rarely holds the dominant position that a sole-source engine gives. It earns its keep through breadth. The share bought by the two airframers is the measure; a rise back toward 20% would mean Collins is becoming more dependent on two production lines it does not control.
Boeing and Airbus 16% of Collins sales, from 19% in 2023.
Dependence on two production lines; a rise toward 20% would mean less balance.
