Visa (V) — threat to the moat
A network effect is a growth engine while the network is filling and a maintenance cost once it is full.
A network effect compounds while a network fills. Visa's is close to full across its developed markets: acceptance is near-universal, card penetration is high, and the merchants still unconnected are the smallest and least profitable ones remaining.
From here the volume line is driven by consumer spending, by inflation, and by the residual shift from cash — all real, all slowing, and none of them within Visa's control. Cash volume on the network fell slightly in fiscal 2025 while payments volume rose 7%1, which is the entire cash-displacement trade rendered in two figures and shows how much of it is already behind us.
This is why the growth story has moved to value-added services and money movement, and why both get their own facet and their own future bets. The risk is not that the network shrinks — it almost certainly will not. It is that a mature network carrying a politically contested toll is being valued at 29 times earnings2, which is a price for growth rather than for durability.
