✦ Intelligent Commerce and the Agent That Holds the CardThin moat
Visa (V) — the future bets
An agent transacting on an unverified rail with no chargeback is a liability nobody wants to underwrite.
Visa's access layer now includes on-demand APIs and an MCP server that enables AI systems to interface with its Visa Intelligent Commerce APIs1. In plain terms, the company is building the plumbing for software agents to make purchases.
The strategic logic is good. If shopping moves from a person choosing a card to an agent executing an instruction, then the network the agents are wired into becomes the default — and what an agent needs most is precisely what Visa already sells: identity, authorisation limits, spending controls, fraud judgement and dispute rights. An agent transacting on an unverified rail with no chargeback is a liability nobody wants to underwrite.
It is genuinely early. Agentic commerce is barely real spending today, and the same observation appears on Adyen's pages in this app. But it is the rare case where Visa is positioning before a market exists rather than responding after it does, and the cost of being early here is close to nothing.
The positioning is early and sensible and the market barely exists. Nothing has yet happened that changes the company's economics.
An AI agent pays with a token rather than a card number, so the token base is the installed base for agentic commerce. Its growth is the nearest disclosed measure of whether agents will carry Visa credentials.
