No Customer Above Ten Percent, and Nothing to DiscloseWide moat

Visa (V) — moat facet

Visa has eliminated idiosyncratic customer risk almost entirely and retains the systematic kind in full.

Visa's annual report contains no customer-concentration note. Against most of this collection that absence is worth stating explicitly, and it is genuine: the business is spread across nearly 14,500 financial institutions in more than 200 countries1.

Net revenue by geography, June 2026 quarter ($bn)$4.41bnU.S.$7.22bnInternationalVisa Form 10-Q, quarter to 30 June 2026; no client above 10% of revenue
Sixty-two percent from outside the U.S., spread across nearly 14,500 institutions.

The protection is real. No single client failure, defection or renegotiation moves the reported numbers. Visa processed through the 2008 banking crisis, through the failure of several large issuers, and through a decade of consolidation in American banking without any of it appearing as a revenue event. Very few companies of this size can say that.

The qualification is that the clients are not independent of one another in the way a diversified customer base normally implies. They are all banks. They are regulated by a small number of authorities, they all operate under the same interchange rules, and a change to those rules reaches every one of them in the same quarter. Diversification across names is not diversification across outcomes, and the outcome that matters — what a card issuer earns per transaction — is set by legislators rather than by any individual bank's fortunes.

So the correct reading of the missing table is that Visa has eliminated idiosyncratic customer risk almost entirely and retains the systematic kind in full.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Nearly 14,500 institutions in more than 200 countries, and Visa has come through the failure of very large issuers without a revenue event.

The number that tests this moat
Moat Explorer calc
U.S. share of net revenue, latest quarter
38% - $4,410M of $11,633M

No single client is large, so the concentration that matters is by country. A rising US share would put more of the company under one set of courts and one legislature.

How it's calculated: U.S. net revenue of $4,410M divided by total net revenue of $11,633M for the three months ended 30 June 2026.
