OtherThin moat

Texas Instruments (TXN) — moat facet

Legacy products kept for their cash, whose profit swings with company-level charges.

Other is the part of Texas Instruments that is neither analog nor embedded. It had revenue of $979 million in 2025 and operating profit of $307 million.1 The filing says it includes DLP products, calculators and custom ASIC products, and that its operating profit includes restructuring charges and other items.2

Down about 46% since 2016: DLP, calculators and custom chips.

It has been shrinking for a decade. Revenue was $1,811 million in 2016 and fell in most years to $947 million in 2024, before rising $32 million in 2025; over the whole period it fell about 46%.345 It was about 13.5% of TI's revenue in 2016 and about 5.5% in 2025.678

Its profit is hard to read because the segment carries company-level items. Operating profit was $622 million in 2016 and $505 million in 2024, a margin of about 53.3% that year, then $307 million in 2025, about 31.4%.91011 The 2024 figure benefited from a $124 million credit in the restructuring line, and 2025 was reduced by $117 million of restructuring charges.12

The latest quarter also carried a company item. Other's revenue was $310 million in the three months to 30 June 2026, against $317 million, and its operating profit $150 million, including $17 million of acquisition charges.13 Over the first half revenue was $488 million, down about 7.8%.1415

The verdict is that this line is a set of legacy products TI keeps for their cash, not a growth business, and its results say little about the moat. The measure is its revenue: under $1 billion and falling slowly, it matters only if a restructuring or acquisition charge makes its profit swing.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Revenue down about 7.8% in H1 2026, continuing a decade of decline.

The legacy line keeps shrinking; it matters only when a company-level charge lands in it.
