SpaceX (SPCX) — threat to the moat

Culture, once cracked, is hard to reset.

Talent drawn by mission is a powerful moat and a fragile one. It depends on the mission staying inspiring and the founder staying a draw rather than a deterrent — and both are less certain than they were. Musk's polarizing political turn has made the company a harder sell to some of the very engineers it needs; the grind that motivated true believers wears on everyone eventually; and a newly public company with a soaring stock creates a cohort of wealthy employees with less reason to endure the hours. Cultures built on mission and intensity can curdle quickly if the mission dims or the leadership alienates, and a talent moat, once it starts to leak its best people to rivals — and Blue Origin and the new entrants are hiring from the same pool1 — is very hard to reseal.
