Direct-to-Cell & New MarketsNarrow moat

SpaceX (SPCX) — moat facet

Beaming to the phone already in your pocket — the optionality on everyone.

The next act aims to dissolve the biggest limit on Starlink's market — the need for a dish. By partnering with mobile carriers to beam signal directly to ordinary, unmodified smartphones, SpaceX is reaching for a market measured not in millions of dish owners but in billions of phones, offering coverage in the dead zones between towers where every terrestrial carrier fails. If it works at scale, direct-to-cell turns Starlink from a niche broadband provider into a layer of connectivity that rides atop the entire mobile industry, collecting a slice of the world's phone bills for filling in the map.

The line that carries the new markets grew 108% in a year and 63% in a quarter.

It is the clearest of Starlink's several call options. The consumer dish business is already large and profitable; the premium maritime, aviation, and government segments are growing; and now the direct-to-cell push, plus a widening menu of enterprise and defense applications, extends the addressable market by an order of magnitude. Much of what the public market is paying for is the belief that Starlink is not a finished product but an expanding platform, still early in claiming the markets that only a constellation can serve — with >$11B of revenue already booked from the first of them1.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Widening the addressable market — beaming to ordinary phones reaches for a market of billions rather than millions of dishes. Genuine expansion of the opportunity, though still more promise than booked revenue.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Average revenue per Starlink user
$66 a month in Q2 2026, level with Q1, from $85 a year earlier

ARPU fell as cheaper markets were added and has now held for two quarters. A renewed fall would mean new markets are being bought with price.
