SpaceX (SPCX) — threat to the moat

Kuiper and China's answer are coming — the orbital land grab has other bidders.

Starlink's lead is large but no longer lonely. Amazon is spending tens of billions to deploy Kuiper1, a rival constellation backed by one of the world's deepest balance sheets and a built-in distribution machine; China is racing to loft its own state-backed mega-constellations, partly to deny SpaceX a monopoly over the skies; and other national and commercial efforts are stirring. None yet matches Starlink's scale, cost, or profitability, and the first-mover claim on spectrum and orbits is a real barrier. But these are not the flimsy challengers of Starlink's early years — they are among the best-capitalized entities on earth, and they have both commercial and strategic reasons to build a competing network regardless of the near-term returns. The moat is widest today; the constellation race has only just begun.

The constellation wears out at $2.4 billion a year: any rival must build a network and then keep rebuilding it.
