Subscriber Scale & Network EffectsWide moat

SpaceX (SPCX) — moat facet

Ten million users fund more satellites, which win more users — the constellation flywheel.

Starlink's subscriber base has climbed at a pace few businesses of any kind achieve — from roughly two million users to over ten million in about three years1 — and scale in this business is a moat, not merely a milestone. A satellite broadband network has enormous fixed costs: the constellation must be built and constantly replenished whether it serves one customer or ten million. Spread those costs over a small base and the economics are dreadful; spread them over ten million paying subscribers and the same constellation becomes a profit machine. Every additional subscriber, up to the capacity of the network, is close to pure margin.

Revenue nearly trebled in two years as the base scaled.

That is why scale here is self-defending. The leader with ten million subscribers can fund the next generation of satellites, densify capacity, and lower prices from a position of profit, while a challenger must build a comparably vast constellation first and carry its full cost while serving almost no one. The gap in unit economics between the incumbent at scale and the aspirant at zero is the moat — and it widens with every launch SpaceX makes and every subscriber it adds.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Widening. Ten-million-plus subscribers spread the constellation's huge fixed costs over an ever-larger base, so each new user approaches pure margin and funds the next generation of satellites.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Starlink net subscriber additions, latest quarter
1.7M in Q2 2026, to 12.0M

Subscribers doubled in a year. The quarterly addition is the leading indicator: if it shrinks while prices hold, demand is saturating.
