Twelve and a Half Million CustomersWide moat
PKO Bank Polski (PKO) — moat facet
One in three Poles banks here, which took a hundred and six years and cannot be bought.
PKO served 12 460 thousand customers at the end of 20251, in a country of some 37 million people.
That is roughly one Pole in three, and it is the number every other advantage in this company rests on. A bank with a third of the population has the cheapest possible distribution for any new product, which is why PKO can put a car marketplace and a consumer-credit product in front of an audience it did not have to acquire.
The base is still compounding, slowly and reliably: 11 120 thousand in 2021, 11,666, 11,911, 12,133, then 12 4602 — about 300 thousand net new customers a year without a single acquisition. In the first half of 2026 the figure reached 12,6 million3.
The quality of the relationship is measurable too. PKO reported that it held the number two position among banks most recommended by retail customers in both the third and fourth quarters of 20254, which is a candid disclosure for a company that could simply have said it was large.
What the customer count does not do is confer pricing power. A Polish saver comparing deposit rates online has 29 banks to choose from, and the ones with fewer branches can afford to pay more.
Grade this on net customer additions. Three hundred thousand a year is a franchise quietly widening. Flat would mean PKO has stopped taking share in a market where deposits are still growing at 13%.
The base grew every year of the last five, and 12,6 million by mid-2026. In a shrinking population that is share taken from someone.
About one Pole in three. Growth of roughly 2,8% a year in a country whose population is falling means the base is taken from rivals rather than from demographics. 12,6 million by mid-2026. The year it stops rising is the year the franchise is fully built out.
