Fifteen Percent Is the Most Anyone HasNarrow moat

PKO Bank Polski (PKO) — moat facet

Being number one in Polish banking means holding about a seventh of the sector's assets.

PKO holds about 15% of Polish banking assets and is the largest institution in the country1. Twenty-nine banks operate in the market2.

The market is consolidating around PKO rather than into it. Its fifteen percent has not fallen - the gap to second place is closing anyway.

Set that against the companies this app usually calls dominant. Visa and Mastercard split most of a continent's card volume between them; Allegro is the marketplace most Polish online shopping passes through; Dino is the only grocer in a great many Polish towns. PKO is the biggest of thirty, which is a genuinely weaker position and produces genuinely weaker pricing power.

The consequence shows in the deposit franchise. A saver comparing rates has real alternatives, several of them large and well capitalised, so PKO's funding advantage comes from inertia and branch coverage rather than from an absence of choice.

The leadership is real even so. PKO's own report describes it as the largest commercial bank in Poland and the leading bank on its home market in terms of the scale of operations3: 583 079 million złoty of assets4, 947 branches5 and 12 460 thousand customers6. Leadership in a fragmented market still means being the institution present in every part of the country.

Where scale does convert is cost. At 31,1% cost-to-income7 PKO spends thirty-one złoty of expense for every hundred it earns, which is what spreading 947 branches and 26 252 employees across 583 079 million złoty of assets buys, and that advantage compounds quietly.

Grade this on PKO's share of sector assets rather than on its growth. Growing in line with the market is holding a leading position; the share moving up would be the first evidence in years that Polish banking is finally consolidating toward its largest participant.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Fifteen percent of sector assets is unchanged while Erste and PZU-Pekao assemble larger rivals around it.

Twenty-nine licensed banks for a market of 37 million people, and the largest holds fifteen percent. The structural question for PKO is whether that number falls: consolidation would hand the survivors pricing power none of them has today, and the two deals that have happened - Erste-Santander and PZU-Pekao - both went to rivals.
