IKO and the Eight Point Seven MillionNarrow moat

PKO Bank Polski (PKO) — moat facet

Eight point seven million active installations is the largest banking app in Poland — and the one part of the franchise a competitor can genuinely replicate.

More than 8,7 million active installations of IKO1, PKO's mobile application, against 12 460 thousand customers2 — roughly seven in ten of the bank's customers carry it.

Most of twelve and a half million relationships are now conducted through software - which is the part of the franchise that needed no century to build.

That is the answer to the obvious criticism of a 947-branch incumbent. PKO did not wait to be disrupted by a digital-only rival; it built the cheaper channel itself and moved most of its base onto it, which is why the cost-to-income ratio is 31,1%3 rather than the forty-something a branch network alone would produce.

The application also changes what the bank can sell. A product placed in front of 8,7 million people who already trust the institution costs nothing to distribute, and PKO has used that to push into adjacent businesses — the Allegro partnership and the Automarket vehicle marketplace both reach customers through it4.

The uncomfortable part is that a mobile app is where a bank's advantages are smallest. Branches cannot be replicated; software can, and the features that differentiate a banking application in one year are standard in the next.

The app is not what holds the customer: the account, the salary, the mortgage and the century of presence.

The measure is active installations against customers. Seven in ten is high; approaching nine in ten would mean the expensive network is genuinely optional for most of the base, which is when the branch question stops being awkward and starts being an opportunity.

The number that tests this moat

Active mobile installations
More than 8,7 million

The largest banking application in Poland, and the channel through which most of the twelve and a half million relationships are now actually conducted. It is also the part of the franchise that requires no branch, no licence history and no hundred-year brand to copy - Revolut reached fifteen million Polish users without any of them.
